Medical Biochemistry

Our world is a platform where living things interact with each other. This interaction is being studied by many disciplines. Some of these investigations are macroscopic and others are microscopic. Biochemistry, microscopic and molecular level; is a branch of science that studies all biochemical reactions related to the survival of vitality and healthy living. It has the widest application area of medicine. Maintaining a healthy life, understanding and treating diseases require good knowledge and practice of biochemistry. Therefore, biochemistry plays an important role in the fields of medicine, biotechnology, bioengineering and especially in the recognition and treatment of diseases. Defining being healthy, monitoring diseases, creating chemicals and analysis systems for diagnosis and treatment cannot be considered separately from biochemistry.

 Medical Biochemistry is academically targeted and aimed at educating scientists who will use it to teach later. This training is required to become a good medical biochemistry academician. Following the basic biochemistry courses during the education process, information about health and disease conditions, taking and storage conditions of various body fluids and tissue samples and analysis processes are learned. To learn the working principles of the technologies to be used in biochemical studies, related devices, calibration of the devices, to work under optimum conditions, to prepare the samples to be analyzed in these systems. Medical Biochemistry to prepare and support individuals who will contribute to the production, development and application of science and biotechnology in our age.

Medical Biochemistry  program took its first students in 2018-2019 Academic Fall Semester and has not graduated yet. Education and research activities are carried out by 2 professors, 2 associate professors and 2 physicians. The language of instruction is Turkish. The program includes compulsory and elective courses in the field of Medical Biochemistry. Compulsory and elective courses in the first four semesters; After the qualification, the thesis is carried out.

Admission Requirements

Have to participate in the interview to be held by a jury composed of at least three (3) persons determined by the Board of Directors of the Graduate School.

In the evaluation of success in  program; 50% of ALES, 20% of the MSc Graduation average and 30% of the interview score are evaluated out of 100 (this average should be at least 65) and are ranked according to the lowest score and the highest score within the quota acceptable

Program Outcomes

  1. Students will be able to comprehend pathways and related disorders of cell structure and energy production at the end of medical biochemistry doctorate education
  2. Describe biochemical events in health and pathological conditions in living organisms, anabolic and catabolic processes in metabolism at the molecular level
  3. Gains knowledge of the principles and uses of basic analytical techniques used in medical laboratories for diagnosis, treatment and follow-up
  4. To learn the basic rules and working principles of research laboratories and to understand the issues related to laboratory safety
  5. After studying the basic biochemical metabolism of single-celled and multi-celled organisms, it primarily evaluates the systems, tissue organs and the cells that make up them in biochemical terms; It also describes how the metabolic processes in the cell occur on the biochemical axis.
  6. Learn how cells communicate with each other, structure of hormones and other chemicals used for this purpose, signal transduction, endocrine system functioning and regulation mechanisms,
  7. Distinguish carbohydrate, lipid and protein metabolism together with these molecules and their complex structures and their relationship with human and normal conditions
  8. The structure and functions of nucleic acids, DNA organization, replication and repair mechanisms, RNA synthesis, processing and modification, protein synthesis, genetic code, regulation of gene expression, molecular genetics, recombinant DNA and genome Technologies
  9. Using his / her practical and theoretical knowledge and skills, he / she should be able to make a thesis on a variety of research topics or take part in a project. Make interdisciplinary and interdisciplinary teamwork
  10. To be able to communicate by expressing his / her knowledge and opinions in an open and concise manner verbally and in writing by having the ability to make individual decisions
  11. A doctor (phD) candidate who will complete this training is expected to prepare a research project and communicate with the units and institutions that support it, organize the execution of the project and have the ability to work in coordination with multidisciplinary and related researchers for this purpose.

Graduation Requirements

Doctorate program is a minimum of 240 ECTS including at least eight courses, seminars, proficiency exams, thesis proposal and thesis work, provided that the students are accepted with a master's degree with thesis, in total, not less than twenty-four credits and a semester not less than 60 ECTS. consists of credits. It consists of at least 300 ECTS credits including 14 courses, seminars, proficiency exam, thesis proposal and thesis study for students who have been accepted with undergraduate degree. Students admitted to the PhD / Proficiency in Art program with a bachelor's degree must first take graduate courses.

Students who have successfully completed their courses are taken to the proficiency exam. If she/he is successful in this exam, she/he  presents her/his  thesis proposal before the jury. Submits the progress and results of the thesis to the thesis monitoring committee orally in six-month periods. Seminar and thesis work is non-credit according to local credit system and is evaluated as successful or unsuccessful. The student has to write the results of her/his thesis in accordance with the thesis writing rules of the institute and defend her/his thesis orally before the jury. After the thesis exam, the jury decides to accept, reject or correct the thesis. Students whose thesis is accepted are entitled to receive a graduation certificate.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates with postgraduate degrees in any field of biochemistry can work in different fields. Our graduates in general; food, pharmaceutical, medical and chemical materials, pesticides, cosmetics and detergent industries, fermentation technology-based industry branches, hospitals, universities, medical, agricultural and environmental research centers can work in routine operations and research laboratories. The graduates of the department are; They work as biochemists in production processes or routine quality-control analyzes required by the process, health-related tests, new method development studies and their implementation. As biochemistry establishes the link between different branches, the diversity and prevalence of business fields is increasing. There is also the opportunity to participate in academic studies and training in the field of Biochemistry.
