General Description

Turkey is a rapidly developing country and is experiencing a rapid transformation in areas such as technology, economics, health and education. Although development is a positive and desirable for society in general, this transformation brings with it many economic, cultural and social problems. With the rapid increase in the use of social media and globalization, values from the past are shaken and social and psychological support systems, which derive their origins from traditional culture, begin to lose their function and influence. The family institution where the individual spends a significant part of his/her life is also affected by this transformation and the family's need for assistance as a system increases. The most important problems experienced as a result of this transformation facing the institution of the family is divorce and domestic violence in Turkey. In addition to these problems in the family, traditional sources of social support cannot fulfill their former functions. For this reason, personal and social harmony, psychological health and values system of society and family members are generally damaged. As a result, the family's need for professional counseling is increasing.

Family is one of the most important institutions of society. Because people generally live under a family roof. In order to understand the human and the society, family structure and relationships should be known. Family counseling service is one of the best way in order to better understand family and family relationships. The Family Counseling and Education Graduate Program at our university is a graduate program in which information about the family is learned, and the information learned is analyzed and synthesized and put into practice. With this program, it is aimed to comprehend the problems that the individual may face in the family system and family life cycle and to use this knowledge to make the family system more powerful. In this context, graduates of the program will play an active role in the protection and development of the family institution in the face of the rapid transformation in society.

Acceptance Requirements

  • In order to apply for the master's program with thesis, it is required a bachelor’s degree (at least 4-four- years of undergraduate education) from the faculties or colleges of Turkey or a university that YÖK recognizes; graduates of Psychological Counseling and Guidance, Preschool Education, Child Development, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Nursing and Medicine.
  • To score 60 or more from ALES Equally Weighted (EA) / Verbal  (SÖZ) score types.
  • Evaluation of candidates in the program, 20% of the undergraduate grade point average, 50% of the ALES exam and 30% of the departmental interview and/or written exam grade is made according to the score obtained. This score must be at least 65 in order to be taken into consideration for success.

Capabilities the programs aims for the graduate to obtain:

  1. Be able to analyze the family system and structure.
  2. To have up-to-date knowledge and skills in the field of family counseling.
  3. To be able to systematically determine the needs of the family based on the basic principles of family counseling.
  4. To be able to provide assistance to the family with an interdisciplinary approach in line with the needs of the family.
  5. Having problem solving skills.
  6. To be able to help to protect and support the family's values system.
  7. Having knowledge of the basic rights of each individual in the family.
  8. Recognizing the communication patterns in the family and helping to establish healthy communication.
  9. Having in depth knowledge and applying current techniques and theories in family counseling.
  10. Having knowledge of how to approach trauma and crisis situations.
  11. Having in depth knowledge of the research methods of family counseling and to be able to conduct an original research.

Graduation Conditions

In order to obtain a master's degree (with thesis) from Family Counseling and Education program, it is necessary to complete at least 30 credit courses and master's thesis and to fulfill the relevant provisions of Istanbul Medeniyet University Graduate Education and Examination Regulation.

Employment Prospects

The aim of the program is to train practitioners in this field. Graduates of this program can serve  as marriage and family counselor at institutions such as family counseling centers, Guidance and Research Centers, Ministry of Family and Social Policies, social services centers and institutions such as marriage and family counseling can serve as. Graduates can work in the private family counseling centres, psycho-social counseling centers, Ministry of Family and Social Policies, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Health and private institutions and organizations affiliated to it. They can also work in the military institutions.
