Elementary Mathematics Teaching

  1. About the Program

The Master of Science (MSc) Program in Elementary Mathematics Teaching with thesis started in the academic year of 2019-2020 at the Medeniyet University Graduate School of Education. It is designed for elementary mathematics teachers and graduates who want to specialize in their field. The aim of the program is to (a) help educators how to teach mathematical concepts, (b) to inform them about learning theories and approaches in mathematics education, mathematics curriculum and the use of technology in mathematics education, (c) to train experts equipped with technological knowledge and skills. The program aims to educate individuals who can conduct research at graduate level in mathematics education. In addition, it provides them an opportunity to reach innovations in the field and enable them to develop themselves through master education.

  1. Admission Requirements

Istanbul Medeniyet University Graduate Education Regulation is applied to as the basis for the proposed program. Individuals who have graduated from elementary mathematics education department or have worked as an elementary mathematics teacher can apply to the program. ALES (Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Exam) numerical score of applicants must be at least 65 points. In addition, oral examination is conducted in order to measure applicants’ knowledge of the field, their experience and their susceptibility to scientific research. ALES score, undergraduate grade point average (GPA) and the results of the oral exam take into consideration during the evaluating the applications and placing applicants in the program. Candidates;

a) 50% of the ALES score,

b) 20% of undergraduate GPA,

c) 30% of the oral exam score

are added. The, those who score at least 65 points will be placed in the program according to the existing quota.

  1. Program Competencies

The program consists of a total of 24 local credits and 8 courses (3 compulsory and 5 elective courses), a seminar course, a specialization field course and a master's thesis course, provided that it is not less than 120 ECTS. In addition to midterm and final exams, learning activities such as reports, assignments, seminar presentations and project studies can be used in the assessment of student performance during the semester.

  1. Information about Course Content

MAE 501 Scientific Research Methods (3,0,3, 7)

In this course, students' knowledge of academic research methods and writing and interpretation skills will be developed. (a) Quantitative and qualitative research methods, (b) action research, (c) resource search in scientific research, (d) research report writing according to APA, (e) research models, types and characteristics, (f) data collection techniques; measurement, analysis and interpretation of data will be discussed. 

MAE 502 Theories in Mathematics Education (3,0,3, 7)

In this course, the theories in mathematics education will be discussed and their applications in mathematics education will be examined. Students will conduct a field survey in which they will synthesize scientific studies and theoretical approaches.

MAE 503 Examination of Mathematics Curriculum (3,0,3, 76)

The aim of this course is to examine subjects, concepts and objectives and gaols  related to mathematics, content, learning and teaching process and evaluation elements  by focusing on preschool to high school, especially at elementary  school level and to compare them with the programs of other countries.

MAE 504 Seminar (1,1,0, 4)

Students will conduct their research and literature review seminar course for their master thesis. Students will have the opportunity to present their literature research and thesis research topics and get feedback from the instructors  and classmates.

MAE 505 Special Topics (4,0,0, 12)

In this course, the advisor will work with the students  related to their thesis.

MAE 506 Statistical Applications in Education (3,0,3, 7)

Descriptive statistics, central tendency, distribution, variability measures, correlation, graphing of data, sample, hypothesis test, t-test, variance analysis and chi-square test for related research designs will be disccussed and statistical analysis applications will be studied in educational researches.

MAE 507 Qualitative Research Methods in Education (3,0,3, 7)

In this course, the students will develop their knowledge and skills in the comparison of qualitative and quantitative research characteristics, qualitative data collection techniques, theory in qualitative study, preparation of measurement tools, analysis of qualitative data and reporting.

MAE 508 Mathematical Concepts in Elementary Education (3,0,3, 7)

This course aims to develop the pedagogical knowledge about the basic mathematical concepts in the fields of numbers and operations, measurement, algebra, geometry, statistics and probability.

MAE 509 Mathematical Modelling (3,0,3, 7)

In this course, the use of modeling approach in Mathematics Curriculum in Turkey will be examined. Mathematical models applied to selected problems from physical problems, daily life, social sciences and science will be exemplified in the light of the curriculum gains.

MAE 510 Problem Solving and Posing in Mathematics Education (3,0,3, 7)

The aim of this course is to examine the historical development of problem solving and constructing and to discuss the approaches used in problem solving and problem posing.

MAE 511 Current Issues in Mathematics Education (3,0,3, 7)

In this course, the important issues discussed in mathematics education in the last 10 years will be discussed in terms of students, teachers and programs.

MAE 512 New Teaching Methods in Mathematics Education and Measurement and Evaluation Approaches (3,0,3, 7)

In the course, the teaching process at elementary level will be examined with a clinical approach. In addition, the relationship between measurement and assessment in mathematics teaching, the aims of the assessment, the qualifications required in the assessment tools, traditional and new assessment approaches, performance evaluation, rubric and international evaluation programs will be disccused.

MAE 513 Technology Applications in Mathematics Education (3,0,3, 7)

In this course, the new opportunities provided by educational technologies to mathematics education will be examined. New teaching activities will be designed in mathematics courses with computer technologies, web-based software, dynamic geometry and graphic software.

MAE 514 Teaching and Teaching Mathematics in the Context of STEM (3,0,3, 7)

It is focused on (a) learning and teaching of mathematics in an interdisciplinary context, (b) the role of mathematics in STEM (science, mathematics, technology and engineering) education, (c) application of mathematics to real-life situations, (d) solving mathematical problems through group work,  (e) searching for solutions of real life situations in the context of STEM,(f)  STEM projects focusing on mathematics development.

MAE 515 Independent Studies in Mathematics Education (3,0,3, 7)

Students in the program under the supervision of the instructor  conduct a reseach (independently select a topic)  in the field of mathematics education in accordance with the scientific research ethics and report it.

MAE 516 Master Thesis (0,0,0, 48)

Student will carry  out  thesis indepently under the supervision of the master's thesis supervisor  in the program.

  1. Graduation Requirements

The student who is registered to the master's program with thesis must write the results of the thesis in accordance with the rules of writing the thesis and defend the thesis orally before the jury. After the completion of the thesis exam, the jury decides on acceptance, rejection or correction by absolute majority. Students who successfully complete the thesis graduate from the program.

  1. Employment Opportunities

Graduates of the Department of Elementary Mathematics Teaching (MSc)  can work as a consultant in mathematics programs in private and public institutions. They can teach at undergraduate and graduate level at state and foundation universities. In addition, graduates can create an academic career for the future if they transfer to doctoral programs.
