General Information about the M.A. Program

History of the Department

The Department of Economics at Istanbul Medeniyet University was established in 2010.

Qualification Awarded

The students who successfully complete the program are awarded a master’s degree (M.A.).

Goals

The program aims to provide students with a solid theoretical background in economics and with econometric and statistical methods and tools of analysis in applied fields. In addition, regarding the needs of both public and private sectors, it is aimed for students to acquire the ability to conduct independent economic research, to have analytical thinking, problem-solving skills and to be qualified for the work place.

Objectives

The aim of the program is to train future economists who have the required skills in the fields of economic analysis and economic policy, which both the public and the private sector need. The program intends to provide a quality M.A. education so that the graduates of the program can continue their academic careers in the face of national and international competition.

Graduate Program Requirements

ALES and Foreign Language scores are required for applying to the M.A. program in Economics at Istanbul Medeniyet University. Admission and application requirements for the program are announced on the website at the Graduate School prior to the start of each academic year (www.enstitu.medeniyet.edu.tr).

Key Learning Outcomes

1. Students are able to understand national and international literature in the fields of macroeconomics and microeconomics and conduct independent scientific research.

2. Students have knowledge about the basic stages of a scientific research process and the current methods and approaches to be followed in these stages.

3. Students prepare research proposals and produce functional research designs.

4. Students can use quantitative research techniques and can effectively use software programs for the implementation of these techniques.

5. Students have knowledge about current economic models, applications and econometric methods.

6. Students have the consciousness to act in accordance with ethical rules and general ethical principles.

Graduation Requirements

In order to graduate, the students must take the courses (60 ECTS credits) announced in the program and complete these courses successfully. After the core curriculum, considering the field specialization and the thesis courses, in total 120 ECTS must be completed. Following the completion of the course load, the M.A. thesis should be submitted under the guidance of a supervisor. In addition, the student whose thesis is accepted is required to present and defend successfully his/her work in front of the appointed jury.

Employment Opportunities

Our students who successfully complete the program can apply to doctoral programs in the field of economics or other related social science disciplines. Our graduates can also work in various positions in the private and public sectors. In addition, they can work as experts in economic and financial research departments of various private or public institutions. Possessed with quantitative perspectives and analytical thinking skills, our graduates have employment opportunities in academic institutions as well as in private and public institutions (such as State Planning Organization, the Central Bank of Turkey,  etc.).
