Medical Physiology

1. About the Program

Medical physiology is the basic medical science examining the tasks of the cells, tissues, organs and systems that comprise the human structure, the mechanisms of performing these tasks the cause-and-effect connections, as well as the relations of these structures with each other and outside world, and explains this based on the results of experiments conducted with positive science laws and scientific methods.

The aim of the PhD program in Medical Physiology is to educate a scientist who possesses a certain knowledge and skills in the field of medical physiology, has the ability to conduct scientific research, access to information, evaluate and interpret information, and possesses the ethical and social qualities of the universal scientist. The doctoral education program consists of courses, proficiency exam, thesis proposal, thesis study and thesis defense exam. The study period is 4 years. The first three semesters are the course period, the fourth semester is the proficiency exam and the next two years is the thesis period. The student conducts the course period in consultation with a faculty member and at least one faculty member to conduct his thesis work.  The language of education is Turkish.

The department is mainly involved in exercise physiology, aging, endocrine system physiology, electrophysiology, neurophysiology, blood physiology, cardiovascular system physiology.

Purpose

The knowledge in the field of general medical physiology, literature knowledge and laboratory skills related to at least one research subject have reached international level; To cultivate a medical physiology specialist who carries the ethical and social qualities of the universal scientist.

Objective

  • Adequate knowledge of medical physiology and other fundamental medical sciences to support physiology information,
  • Current literature information on research subjects,
  • The ability to pursue developments in medical physiology and research,
  • Information on laboratory safety and Research ethics,
  • The ability to use basic laboratory devices and special devices for the subject matter,
  • Provide the ability to make presentations and transfer information

2. Admission Requirements

Applicants must have graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry or Veterinary Faculty or have a Master of Science degree in Medical Physiology, Neurophysiology (Neuroscience). According to the minimum conditions determined by the Istanbul Medeniyet University Graduate Regulation, scores of ALES and Foreign Language in the application conditions announced each semester are required. 50% of the ALES scores, 20% of the undergraduate or graduate grade point averages and 30% of the scientific interview are evaluated.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon the successful completion of this programme, our graduates will:

1. have enough basic knowledge about medical physiology and other basic medical sciences to support physiology knowledge, evaluate and develop this knowledge critically.

2. have the current literature knowledge related to the field, continuously improve professional knowledge and skills, adopt and appliy the principles of lifelong learning.

3. plan scientific research on subjects related to the field, conduct it independently and / or as a team, have knowledge about statistics, use the necessary software correctly, and propose solutions to problems.

4. know the importance of communication with other related sciences, use knowledge and problem-solving ability in interdisciplinary studies.

5. write the report of the research participated in, publishe in national and / or international refereed journals and present in scientific meetings.

6. use information and communication technologies required by the field

7. have knowledge about laboratory safety and research ethics and consider these values in data collection, interpretation and announcement stages.

5.Graduation Requirements

Doctorate program consists of at least 240 ECTS credits, including at least eight courses, seminars, specialty field courses, proficiency exam, thesis proposal and thesis study, which are not less than 60 ECTS and 24 credits in one academic year for who admitted with a master's degree. After passing the courses, graudates must pass the proficiency exam, submit the thesis proposal and complete and defend the thesis.

6. Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Graduates of the Doctoral  Program in Physiology receive the title of Doctor (PhD) upon completion of the program and may take part in the academic staff of the Physiology Departments of all universities continue their academic life. They also conduct health projects in the public or private sectors. In addition, they can continue their studies abroad in various universities or research units.
