İslamic and Turkish Philosophy

About the program:

The PhD program in Turkish and Islamic philosophy aims to enhance the student with the knowledge of the tradition of mediaeval ages in its entirety. By way of focusing on the philosophical enterprise of Islamic and Turkish thought in its all  facets including  methodology, metaphysics, ontology, theology, epistemology and axiology, the program aims to relate to contemporary philosophical problems, forms of thinking and intellectual interests.

While aiming to rediscover the classical heritage, the program also takes as its subject the intellectual ventures of modern and pre-modern Islamic societies, (esp. Seljukid-Ottoman-Turkish) in the light of philosophical disciplines. The faculty running the program are highly esteemed in Turkey in the field of Islamic Philosophy and Turkish thought with their publications. In this regard, philological, hermeneutical and philosophical readings of the works of classical Islamic philosophers and contemporary philosophical problems discussed in Turkey and the world are also studied. The publications and projects of our specialized faculty bear weight on Islamic philosophy debates in Turkey and the world at large.

Conditions of Acceptance:

  1. For entry to the PhD program (with thesis), a bachelor’s/master’s degree from a Turkish university or a university that YÖK recognizes.
  2. For graduate programs in Islamic and Turkish Philosophy, sufficient expertise in Classical Arabic and Persian 
  3. ALES examination or its equivalent (at least 70 pts)
  4. Foreign Language Proficiency in one of languages required by YÖK via language examinations by ÖSYM (at least 65 pts)
  5. Evaluation and Placement: 50% of ALES pts; 20% of bachelor’s degree gpa; 30% of Departmental interview and/or written examination; the total must at least be 65.

Capabilities the programs aims for the graduate to obtain:

  • Have in-depth knowledge of main problems and subdisciplines of philosophy
  • Have extensive knowledge of primary and secondary literature, both national and international,  on area of specialization
  • Be able to evaluate and employ contemporary discussions in philosophy
  • Be able to publish in national and international scientific media
  • Be able to conduct interdisciplinary research with full-specialized knowledge
  • Has sufficient knowledge of at least one source language of philosophy at the European Language Portfolio C1 Level
  • Be able to work with/for bodies, institutions, etc. whose domains have influence on philosophy and its problems

Conditions of Graduation:

Students pass courses taken during a 2-term period and take the doctorate qualifications examination, upon the successful completion of which the student has to write and successfully defend their dissertation.

Employment Prospects:

The program is designed for those who aim to be academics and specialists. In this respect, the graduates can seek academic job or related specialist positions in various institutions
