History

The Philosophy of Doctorate program of the Department of History aims to train students to be specialized in different areas of the history. During the program, students are trained to be researchers and academicians who can give productive and critical answers to the questions which emerged in any period of time in the history or in current times. 

Graduate students are expected to work on verbal and written studies according to the outcomes of their own researches. Students will be obtaining advanced level of specialized knowledge in the fields which they are studying, and they will acquire expertize in history and methodology. Additionally, students will have knowledge and skills which they can use in the Ph.D program or in the positions apart from university which requires academic level of thinking.

 The city of Istanbul, in which we live, has various archives and libraries of manuscripts which have vital importance for the social scientists. Analysis of these sources is a great acquisition not only for the history of Turkey but also for the world history.

 Graduate students will contribute to the mission of our university in general and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities in particular, which aim to gain an outstanding place in national and international circle within the areas of language, history, literature, art, philosophy and psychology in the circle of civilization and culture.

The Ph.D Program of the Department of History is specialized in the following areas:

-Ancient History

-General Turkish and Asian History

-Middle Age History

-Early Modern History

-Late Modern History

-The History Ottoman Institutions and Civilization  

- History of Turkish Republic

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

The Ph.D. program is open to students who have successfully completed the M.A. program in History. Candidates with an M.A. from other departments / universities will be evaluated on an individual basis and may be asked to take additional courses. Candidates will be admitted to the program by the overall average of their GPA, ALES, YDS/YÖKDİL, written and oral examination scores.

Transcripts
Candidates must provide their official transcripts for application for Ph. D. Program. 

ALES
Applicants to Ph.D. programs must have minimum 70 score from ALES (Akademik Lisansüstü Eğitim Sınavı) You need to also upload available scores during online application.

YDS/YÖKDİL
All applicants must prove their foreign language competency by providing their results from YDS or YÖKDİL. Candidates must have minimum 60 score.

Competence of the Graduate Students from the Program:

  1. They will be able to correlate the discipline of history with other social sciences.
  2. They will understand the survey-research methodology of the history and implement this knowledge in a new research.
  3. They will be able to evaluate and examine the historical events from the perspective of the historical methodology.
  4. They will be able to conduct independent scientific studies in new areas while using the survey-research methodology of the discipline of the history.
  5. They can produce original independent studies while using the survey-research methodology of the discipline of the history.
  6. They can express outcomes of their own researches effectively via verbal and written statements.
  7. They learn techniques of the scientific writing.
  8. They can present original point of views to the current affairs via historical perspective.
  9. They learn and criticize the historical literature and resources within the field which they have chosen.

Requirements for Graduation:  The Ph.D. program requires students to complete a minimum of 24 credits of coursework. Students who are admitted to the Ph.D. program are expected to take two courses in Theory and Method and seven electives. Students in the Ph.D. program are required to pass a qualifying exam upon the completion of their course work and they must complete their Ph.D. dissertation.

Employment Opportunities: Graduates of the program can pursue an academic career. They can work in the history departments of universities. Also, they can work for governmental, non-governmental organizations.
