General Information about the PhD Program in Economics
History of the Department
The Department of Economics in the Faculty of Political Science was established in 2010.
Qualification Awarded
The students who successfully complete the program are awarded a Doctoral degree (PhD).
Goals
The aim of this program is to enable students to gain the ability to access, evaluate and interpret scientific knowledge and research in the field of economics. The program aims to provide students with a solid theoretical background and to equip them with an econometric and statistical toolbox and perspectives in applied fields. In addition, it is aimed to provide the students with the ability to conduct economic and econometric analysis, to acquire analytical thinking and problem-solving skills, and to create a qualified workforce in both the public and private sectors.
Objectives
The aim of the program is to train economists with advanced skills in the fields of economic analysis and economic policy-making, to meet the needs of both the public and the private sector. The program aims to educate future academicians and researchers, ready for international engagement, and careers in a global society.
Graduate Program Requirements
ALES (the Turkish aptitude test) and Foreign Language Test (English) scores are required for applying to the Ph.D. program in Economics at Istanbul Medeniyet University. Admission and application requirements for the program are published on the website of the Graduate School before the start of each academic year (www.enstitu.medeniyet.edu.tr).
Key Learning Outcomes
1. Students are able to understand national and international literature in the fields of macroeconomics and microeconomics and conduct independent scientific research.
2. Students have knowledge about the basic stages of a scientific research process and the current research methods and approaches to be followed in these stages.
3. Students can prepare research proposals and produce relevant and effective research designs.
4. Students can use the basic quantitative decision-making techniques that will be needed in the research process and can effectively use software programs for the implementation of these techniques.
5. Students have knowledge of current economic applications and econometric methods.
6. Students have the consciousness to act in accordance with ethical rules and general ethical principles.

Graduation Requirements
In order to complete the program successfully, it is required to take courses with 60 ECTS credits from the graduate course program and to complete these courses successfully. After the course work, the student must be successful in the Comprehensive Proficiency Exam. Overall, with the steps of thesis proposal writing and the specialization course based on dissertation writing, 240 ECTS credits must be completed. Following the completed course work, the student must first take the Comprehensive Proficiency Exam and then submit a thesis proposal to the Thesis Advisory Committee. Those whose proposals have been accepted are expected to write a dissertation with 90 ECTS credits on a pre-determined subject, under the supervision of an advisor. Lastly, the student whose dissertation is accepted by the advisor and Advisory Committee, must defend his/her thesis successfully in front of a jury to be appointed.
Employment Opportunities
Our graduates work in many positions in the private and public sectors. Possessed with various quantitative tools and analytical thinking skills, our graduates have various opportunities for employment in academic institutions, as well as in private and public institutions (State Planning Organization, Central Bank, Stock Exchange Markets, etc.) where these tools are used effectively. In addition, they can work as experts in economic and financial research departments of private or public institutions. Students who successfully complete the program can apply to post-doctoral programs in the field of economics or other social science disciplines.
