Spiritual Counseling and Guidance

Type of Education (Aims):

The program aims to train the participants, who will become skillful professionals trained in religion and spirituality as well as in psychology and counseling, to provide spiritual counseling. Another aim of the program is to provide theoretical and practical knowledge in accompanying, supporting and guiding individuals in their spiritual and psychological needs. Therefore, the program aims at theoretical as well as practical training.

Objectives:

The program is offered by academics from the Guidance and Psychological Counseling Department and emphasizes practical training. Therefore, it aims to provide the participants who are or will be service providers in the field with necessary skills. The participants shall develop skills for approaching individuals by using secular guidance techniques as well as the client’s beliefs and spirituality in a multi cultural and value manner. While doing this, the participants shall gain ethical values that will prevent them to impose any religious or congregational values in their spiritual work

History:

Spiritual Counseling and Guidance Non-Thesis Master’s Program was approved by YÖK in 2019.

Degree to be achieved:

Graduate in Spiritual Counseling and Guidance Non-Thesis Master’s Program

Terms of Acceptance:

Graduates from the following four-year departments/faculties may apply for the program: psychology, guidance and psychological counseling, theology/divinity/Islamic sciences, social services, nursing. Istanbul Medeniyet University postgraduate education guidelines will be enforced. To apply for the program the nominees must have a bachelor’s degree and may not have been discharged from any postgraduate program due to any disciplinary action. A degree in ALES and foreign language is not required. The terms of acceptance will be announced on the Postgraduate Education Institute’s webpage (www.enstitu.medeniyet.edu.tr) before the academic semester starts.

Future Options:

Graduates from the Spiritual Counseling and Guidance Non-Thesis Master’s Program may proceed to a thesis program when requirements are fulfilled.

Terms of Graduation:

The achieve a degree in Spiritual Counseling and Guidance Non-Thesis Master’s Program the students must complete at least 30 course credits, finish a project, and fulfill the requirements of the Istanbul Medeniyet University postgraduate education and exam guidelines.

Employment Opportunities:

Graduates may have the opportunities to promote in their currant positions. The Presidency of Religious Affaires (Diyanet) is the official executer of spiritual counseling and guidance and employs spiritual counselors and guides in public institutions such as hospitals, prisons, student dormitories, rest homes. From time to time, the presidency also makes calls for guides and psychological counselors. The graduates from the program will have the qualifications for these positions.

Assessment and Evaluation:

To assess and evaluate the students’ success homework assignments, presentations, mid-term and final term exams, project paper will be considered.

Acceptance of Previous Education:

Within the rules of the Istanbul Medeniyet University postgraduate education and exam guidelines students may be exempted from certain courses. The students who enroll the program must apply to the Institute directorate to be exempted from the courses they have taken and passed within ten (10) work days via a petition and approved related documents. The evaluation of the courses to be exempted will be made within ten (10) days by the orientation commission or directorate and will cover the students entire education period.

Terms of Qualification

A degree in ALES and foreign language is not required.  The program’s language is Turkish and cover a period of maximum 3 years that include two semesters courses and one semester writing of a project paper. Students who pass the courses must write a project paper.

Program Competencies

The student

  1. has insights into the literature of spiritual counseling and guidance.
  2. learns basic principles of psychological counseling and guidance
  3. learns and applies basic techniques and principles of psychological counseling and guidance
  4. can transfer knowledge and skills from psychological counseling and guidance to spiritual counseling and guidance
  5. learns basic stages of scientific research and the recent methods and approaches to follow in these stages
  6. gains the awareness of professional and general ethic codes.
